England: London (City)
London City Airport (LCY)
BEST WAY DOWNTOWN: Bus to the Underground

BASICS
London City Airport is located six miles (9 km) east of the center of London, in the docklands area. The airport is small, with one terminal, so the Web site doesn't include a map. Nonethless great info is to be had for the clicking, including: TAXI
Taxis are available outside the Terminal Building. The metered fare is about Ј11 ($18), and the journey to central London takes from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the traffic.

BUS/UNDERGROUND
If you're traveling light, you can catch bus number 473 to the Plaistow Underground Station on the District Line. From there you can catch an eastbound train to central London. The fare is about Ј2.10 ($3.50), but if you are going to travel on the London Transport System during the day, a Travelcard for zones 1,2,3 for about Ј4 ($7) is the best buy.

Bus 473 from airport bus stop 'B' at the Terminal front runs to North Woolwich for Silvertown and London City Airport station, as well as on the Woolwich Ferry on the Silverlink metro. The service runs every 12 minutes.

For more information regarding buses, DLR and London Underground Services, phone 0171-222-1234. For the Silverlink Metro, call 0345-484-950.

CITY AIRPORT SHUTTLE BUS
A convenient and comfortable mode of transport, running every 10 minutes between the airport terminal and Liverpool Street station in the middle of the city. The journey takes 25 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs approximately Ј4 ($7). Passengers can also disembark at Canary Wharf station, only 10 minutes from the airport, on the Docklands Light Railway. A single ticket costs about Ј3 ($5).

TRAIN
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has frequent trains that connect with the Underground system. Unfortunately the DLR only runs on weekdays, with bus service offered on weekends. There is also a long walk to the DLR station, or there are shuttle buses to the DLR Station. But it is a comfortable way to connect to other forms of transport. The cost of one-way travel on the bus and Underground is the same—about Ј2 ($3.50). A one-day Travelcard costs Ј4 ($7) and may be the best deal for those planning to make several trips on public transport.

There is a British Rail line that serves the airport, but it is currently closed. Check the current status of the line, which is called the North London Line. When it opens, this will be the most cost-effective and convenient way out of the airport.

RENTAL CAR
London City Airport is really in the city, where driving a car can be a very trying experience. Central London traffic is not a good place to learn the British way of driving. No matter where you are going in and around London, there are other forms of excellent transportation. But if you persist in wanting to rent a car, Europcar, Avis and a few other agencies are represented at City Airport.
